In the UK we have what are known as Credit Reference Agencies.

These agencies store data about you which is used by financial institutions, landlords and employers to find out more about you and your finances.

A Credit Check is normally performed when you apply for credit, and there is a good chance that one of these agencies will be used when your application is made.

Who are the Credit Reference Agencies in the UK?

The three main credit reference agencies in the UK are: –

• TransUnion
• Equifax
• Experian

You may have seen or read about these credit reference agencies when you have made an application for credit.

On the flip side, if you have been declined for credit it may have been suggested to you that you should write to the Credit Reference Agencies in order to obtain a copy of your credit report.

The reason this is suggested is because there has been some information on your report that has led to the decision to decline your application.

The credit reference agencies themselves do not make any decisions, they just hold the data that is submitted to them by the companies you hold accounts with. They also gather information from public sources as well.

All of the above agencies can offer you a copy of your credit report online, or you can also write to them and request a copy of your statutory report enclosing the relevant fee.
