Onmo Credit Card Review: My Experience with sudden APR changes and system issues

Onmo Reviews

I recently opened a credit card with Onmo and wanted to share my experience so far. This isn’t a technical product breakdown or an affiliate-style review. It’s simply what happened after opening the account and why it raised some concerns.

Opening the Account

I opened the Onmo credit card in August 2025 with an advertised APR of roughly 34%.

The application process itself was straightforward and quick. Like many modern lenders, the decision appears to rely heavily on automated checks and credit reference agency data rather than lengthy manual underwriting.

Initially, everything seemed fairly standard.

The Interest Rate “Review”

A few months later, in November 2025, I received notification that my account had undergone an interest rate review.

Following this review, the APR on the account was set to increase to nearly 54%, which represents a jump of around 20 percentage points.

To their credit, Onmo did provide the option to opt out of the increase. However, opting out meant the account would be restricted from further spending.

In other words, you could keep the original rate, but the card effectively becomes a repayment-only account.

I chose to opt out in order to avoid the higher rate.

While technically optional, it still raises questions about how frequently these types of rate increases occur shortly after accounts are opened.

Direct Debit Confusion

Another issue I experienced involved the Direct Debit system and account status updates.

Despite having a Direct Debit set up and payments being successfully taken, the account was at one stage marked as late, and I received communication suggesting that late payment charges might apply.

At the same time, the Onmo app appeared to display contradictory information about whether a Direct Debit was active.

Situations like this can be stressful because missed payment markers can potentially affect your credit file, even when payments have actually been made.

Customer Support Experience

When raising concerns, the initial response was an automated acknowledgement, which is fairly typical for most lenders.

However, it took some time to receive a meaningful response addressing the issues raised.

This is one area where the experience could likely be improved. When customers are dealing with payment status concerns, faster clarification can make a big difference.

Overall Thoughts

My experience with Onmo so far has been mixed.

The application process is quick and the product itself is fairly typical of credit-builder cards in the UK market. However, two aspects stood out:

  • Large interest rate increases shortly after opening the account
  • Confusing payment status notifications despite Direct Debit payments being made

Neither issue is necessarily unique in the credit card industry, but they are things potential customers should be aware of.

Things to Be Aware Of

If you’re considering an Onmo credit card, it’s worth keeping a few things in mind:

  • Interest rates may be reviewed and increased after opening the account.
  • Opting out of an increase may mean losing the ability to use the card for new spending.
  • Always double-check Direct Debit status and payment confirmations in the app.

In Summary

Credit cards like this can still be useful tools for rebuilding or managing credit when used carefully.

However, as with any form of borrowing, it’s important to fully understand the terms, monitor your account activity, and keep an eye on any changes to interest rates or account status notifications.

Experiences may vary, but transparency and clarity are always important when dealing with financial products.
