Staying positive when in debt might sound difficult but it is possible. The main thing you need to believe in is that you will be debt free one day.
However that all depends on whether or not you have started tackling your debt problems, whether you have confronted your debt situation and finally whether you have sought help dealing with your debt problems.
Knowing your enemy is important, debt is your enemy and you need to know as much as you can about it.
Making a Start with your Debt Problems
As I have mentioned in some of my previous posts, there are a number of solutions to your debt problems. I have written a post about some of these solutions on this blog. Feel free to read more about ways you can get out of debt.
In terms of the debt I currently face, I am positive that one day I will be free of it. I owe a lot of money to a large number of companies, and to some people this fact alone may seem daunting, but to me it is just debt, something I am dealing with and something that one day will not be a problem.
I suppose it is easy for me to say that, but it might not be as easy for someone else. It all depends on your outlook on life and how you cope with things in general. Money to me is something you either have, or don’t have. Other people believe money is everything and being in debt ruins that.
Facing Debt Problems Head On
Ignoring the fact you have debt problems does not make the problem go away. In fact the opposite usually occurs and the situation gets much worse the longer you leave things.
For me, facing debt was part of a bigger problem. I was also a compulsive gambler and a large amount of my debt is because of this gambling addiction. Not only did I have to face my debt problem, but I had to face the fact I had problems with gambling and a bad attitude towards money.
Addressing these issues is important because without doing so, you may end up back to where you started once you are out of debt. I have been in debt twice now because of my bad attitude towards money, although it is this lack of concern for money that means I don’t let the situation I face worry me.
I also started this blog recently as a way to record my debt payment progress and share information with you. I would also like to hear other people’s stories as well if you would like to share them.
Living with Debt
Being in Debt is not fun, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world either. Just sorting out your debt problem, and knowing that you are back on top of things can be a huge help.
Once you have payment arrangements or some other plan in place, things tend to calm down. The only thing you really think about is how long it will take you to pay off what you owe.
I am more careful with my money now and I try to make extra payments towards my debts whenever that is possible. I have even manged to settle some of the smaller ones by saving money on shopping or petrol for example.
Being in debt teaches you the value of money. However I have been in debt twice now, so this might not always be the case. This time round though, I have well and truly learned my lesson.
You should set yourself small goals such as spending a little less on your weekly shop or reducing the cost of your electricity and gas supply. You can use these savings to make extra payments towards your debts.
However every one has a slightly different situation and may not be able to do this. The most important thing is to get help with your debt, and you will find living with it become easier.
At the end of the day, the longer you learn to live with debt, the nearer to being debt free you become. It is a long journey, but it is one that can be done with a little patience and discipline.
I work along the lines of with each and every payment, I get a little closer to the day I owe nothing and I am debt free. Until then, this blog will provide updates on my debt, you are welcome to join me.
